Statement on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, Centrist Party of Canada would like to celebrate the unique heritage, cultures, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples. This year, celebrations are mixed with tragic findings of the remains of residential school children who suffered physical, sexual, and mental abuse, and were forcefully separated from their families and communities against their consent.

We believe that victims deserve complete justice, while an announcement of another review of the military’s culture would not bring much change.

Centrist Party of Canada believes that childcare support in 2021 federal budget is a good initiative. Like Quebec, support for early childcare has been long desired in Canada. However, we do have concerns about the delivery of this program in terms of negotiations with the provinces. Provinces may not be ready to participate in the federal government designed program.

Centrist Party believes that climate change is a real threat to our globe. Strong climate action is necessary; however, this should be done in collaboration with other countries. Canada’s GHG emission are around 1.6%. Unless big polluting nations like China, USA, India, and Russia take effective steps to reduce their GHG emissions, Canada alone will find it very difficult to make a meaningful impact at a global level.

Quebec Bill 21 was legislated in June 2019. As a result of this law a teacher in Quebec was fired last week because she wears a head scarf i.e., Hijab. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been aware of this law as well as this incident. In fact, he has been questioned by journalists’ several times if he would take any practical action against this discriminatory law. He has always given statements which do not reflect any real commitment on his part to end this law.
