John A. Macdonald had decided to build a transcontinental railway to connect the Pacific provinces to the Eastern provinces. There were reports that some members of the conservative government had been bribed to influence the bidding for the contract to build the railway. The scandal led to the resignation of Canada’s first Prime Minister, John A. Macdonald.
